Parks & Reserves in this itinerary

  • Amboseli National Park
  • Selenkay Conservancy
  • Masai Mara National Park

    Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is a place of stark contrast. Meaning a "place of water" in the Maasai language, Amboseli despite its sometimes dry and dusty appearance, has an endless water supply filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Mt. Kilimanjaro's snow melt. These underground streams converge into two clear water springs in the heart of the park.

The endemic dust is volcanic ash which spewed from Mt. Kilimanjaro a millenia ago. During the dry seasons, a curious feature is the shimmering dry lake bed where false mirages of populated horizons, punctuated by real herds of zebras and wildebeests hover in front of visitors. The principal attraction in Amboseli is its vast herds of elephants within the park. The bull elephants here have some of the largest tusks in Kenya. Plentiful game includes: zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and leopard. Caracal and serval cat can be seen. Birdwatchers can see pelicans, bee-eaters, kingfishers, African fish eagles, martial eagles and pygmy falcons.

Amboseli is an important rangeland in Maasai culture. The ranch areas outside the park offer a wealth of gameviewing and walking safaris. The Kenya Wildlife Community Service works closely with the local elders to develop eco-tourism attractions which benefit the endigenous communities and protect this fragile eco-system.

    Selenkay Conservancy

The Selenkay Conservacy lies a few miles north of Amboseli National Park and is an important dispersal area and rangeland for wildlife migrating out of Amboseli. In May 1997, a Kenyan organisation called Porini Ecotourism agreed with the local Maasai community to set aside the area for a reserve for wildlife, so that the habitat could be protected and wildlife conserved.

Selenkay Conservation Area is well off the beaten track and has not been visited by tourists until now. It lies in the heart of Maasailand and the animals are truly wild and not yet habituated to the presence of vehicles. The number of tourist visitors staying at the Amboseli Porini Camp within Selenkay Conservancy is limited to a maximum of eighteen per day to retain the wild and unspoilt nature of the area and to minimise the impact on the environment. Within the conservation area the following animals have been seen recently: elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, Thompson's and Grant's gazelles, gerenuk, impala, oryx, lesser kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, striped hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, caracal, African wild cat, serval cat, genet cat, honey badger, mongoose and ostrich. Birdlife is prolific, especially birds of prey.

    Maasai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara is known as the “Jewel of Africa”, a site with of the largest and the most spectacular animal migration in the world. It is situated in the Maasai land. With a concentration of game superseding most national parks in Africa - Kenya, the Masai Mara offers an 'Out of Africa' experience.

While game viewing at Masai Mara National Reserve, roads and tracks cover every corner of the Mara reserve; game viewing on foot or specially from a hot air balloon adds an exciting dimension to yourl safari. Within the boundaries of the reserve and just outside, there are several luxury lodges and tented camps.
